I'm Tom Hanson. I've spent about 25 years building and maintaining the kind of software that businesses actually depend on — not products, but the internal systems where an outage means somebody's day stops.
Most of that was at Ford Motor Company, supporting more than 35 systems across large engineering organizations. That work covered the whole range: applications used daily by hundreds of engineers, database reporting layers, and data pipelines — including one that pulled raw output from dynamometer control panels, parsed it, and turned it into structured reporting engineering teams could actually use. Which is, in a different costume, exactly the problem on this site's homepage: the data existed, and nobody could see it.
Since then I've worked as an independent consultant and contractor. A ColdFusion platform upgrade at Cardinal Health inside a regulated, validated environment. A university CMS migration that moved a live site off a legacy platform incrementally, with several hundred redirects and a custom tooling layer, without an outage. Windows Server and IIS infrastructure support for clients running production systems. And the Tekmetric reporting build described in the case study.
Why the work looks the way it does
Two things shaped how I approach this. The first is that enterprise experience teaches you what happens when a change goes wrong at scale, which makes you conservative in useful ways — incremental over big-bang, reversible over clever.
The second is that being independent means my reputation is the entire business. There's no firm behind me absorbing a bad outcome. That's why engagements start with a small scoped discovery rather than a large contract, and why I'll tell you when you don't need to hire me.
How I work
Directly, and in plain language. You'll get findings in writing, honest estimates including the parts I'm uncertain about, and a clear answer when something isn't a good fit. I use AI tooling heavily in day-to-day development — it genuinely compresses the timeline on this kind of work — but the architecture, the judgment calls and the accountability are mine.
I'm based in Wolverine Lake, Michigan, and work with clients across the US.
